We encourage you to focus on one or a combination of the following that strengthens belonging in Jasper Place:

• Engaging the community 
• Developing a community resource 
• Repurposing something that already exists 
• Hosting an activity or event 
• Developing a short term pilot program or initiative 

Projects that include the following will be prioritized:

• Projects that enhance or magnify a sense of belonging for a variety of people or groups 
• Include an anti-racism or diversity approach
• Expand the scope of welcoming and/or connecting people in Jasper Place
• Target high needs community members or community members struggling to feel like they belong in Jasper Place

Please note that:

• A key contact must be identified for each project (along with a secondary contact) who is willing to share information about the project publicly. 
• Community members submitting proposals need to have the time, capacity and the relationships needed to execute their proposals.
• Groups may submit multiple proposals for consideration.

Our expectation is that each Project for Belonging that we fund can be accomplished within 3-6 months. 

• Deadline to apply: November 26, 2023
• Successful project proposals chosen by: December 12, 2023
• Timeline of activities to be funded: January 1 through March 31, 2024
• Midterm progress report due: February 28, 2024
• Final report due: April 15, 2024

As these are community development projects that aim to boost connections between community members and intended to spark widespread community action, we require that at least one member of the selected project teams are willing to speak publicly about their work. 

We will promote successful applications through the We Belong in Jasper Place website, social media channels and newsletter subscribers, as well as through the Stony Plain Road Business Association communication channels.

Two progress and evaluation reports will be required as part of the Projects for Belonging Grant process. We will provide templates for all reporting requirements to successful applicants and will also be available to help you complete your reports as needed.

The midterm report will include:

• Funds used thus far by the project and expense receipts 
• Report on outcomes to demonstrate the project is on track on meeting its goals
• The number of community members the project engaged with

The final report will include:

• Total funds spent (final expense form) and expense receipts 
• Report on outcomes and how the project met its goals
• Final number of community members the project engaged with
• Future challenges and opportunities to consider when strengthening belonging in the area
• Recommendations on scaling projects up for the future (if applicable)

All applicants will be required to submit a final report and expense sheet (with proof of receipts) within 30 days of project completion.

There are lots of ways to boost belonging in the area–and we can’t wait to hear your creative ideas! Here are some of the things that are eligible for funding:

• Block parties, neighbourhood art, social, cultural or recreational activities
• Projects, initiatives and events that are open to the public and are free or low cost (cost recovery only)
• Recurring annual events 
• Expenses directly tied to planning, implementation or evaluation of project outcomes
• Honorariums for persons or groups where fees are not legally or traditionally required (for example: Indigenous Elders, presenters, non-vendor licensed service providers). *Honorariums are limited to $200/person
• Gifts for Indigenous protocol, Knowledge Keepers and Elders
• Consumable expenses such as craft/ program/ event supplies
• Fees for performers or other service providers
• Non-consumable expenses that are maintained by the group but available for community use at free or low cost-recovery fees
• Food and non-alcoholic beverages for volunteers or event attendees

Some of the items we are unable to provide grant funding are listed below:

• Projects, initiatives and events that are private or charge entrance fees to generate revenue *unless it is a cost recovery model
• Capital / infrastructure project expenditures to improve City-owned assets or facilities on City land, privately-owned assets on City land or privately-owned assets or facilities on private property (design, contractor costs, construction materials and supplies, furniture, computer equipment etc.)
• Ongoing operating expenses (staff salaries, insurance, legal/ accounting fees, facility operating expenses, facility maintenance etc.)
• Payment for preparation of grant funding application
• Projects that are completed or retroactive expenses incurred prior to submission of your application *Note: reimbursement for expenses incurred prior to receiving notice of grant approval cannot be guaranteed
• Gift cards, gratuities and prizes
• Alcohol, cannabis or associated items
• Food and non-alcoholic beverages for staff or paid employees of the organization(s) supporting your project
• Non-consumable expenses that are for commercial use, rented out or private property

The funds received shall not be used for a purpose beyond the objectives outlined in your grant application. The Applicant must demonstrate fiscal responsibility, managing its finances and sharing with us how the funds were used to strengthen belonging in the area.

Should an applicant make false representations or otherwise fail to meet any of the requirements of the grant to the Stony Plain Road Business Association’s satisfaction, they may be subject to fund repayment. The applicant may also be ineligible for future funding with We Belong in Jasper Place until the outstanding dispute has been resolved.

Pre-Application: Before you apply, we encourage you to review the application form and gather all of the information needed. 

Apply: Complete the online application form. A copy of your submission will be emailed to you automatically once submitted. 

Review: Applications will be reviewed by a panel of community members, supported by the Stony Plain Road Business Association. Applicants may be contacted to provide more information if required.

Approval: Applicants will be notified of the final decision on or after December 12, 2023.
