“We all should know that diversity makes for a rich tapestry, and we must understand that all the threads of the tapestry are equal in value no matter what their color.”

Maya Angelou

What is this project about?

We’ve got a big question that we are working to answer: How might we - as a wider community - foster a stronger sense of belonging for everyone who lives, works and plays in the Jasper Place area?

We want to help sustain everything that makes this area great while cultivating new ideas to make west central Edmonton, including the Jasper Place District and beyond, an even better place to live, work, and visit.

Who’s involved?

Local residents, community members, and visitors of Jasper Place are driving this project. Those involved and engaged in this process are helping to decide our project vision, activities, and initiatives.

The initiative is being supported by the Stony Plain Road Business Association (“Stony Plain Road BA”). The Stony Plain Road BA has secured limited funding from the City of Edmonton to jumpstart our process during the next two years. It is important to note that this project is a transition from the City-led Jasper Place Revitalization Project which is wrapping up after over a decade of presence in our community.

What are you doing?

Where the City’s revitalization process focused on reviving the physical infrastructure of the area, the We Belong in Jasper Place initiative is community-led and focuses on strengthening the social infrastructure of the area.

In June and July of 2023, Community Conversations were held to explore how the community could best direct their efforts for revitalizing the social infrastructure of the area. We’ve heard from local business owners, residents, service providers, community leagues, community-based organizations, City of Edmonton departments and elected officials.

Taking into account the different directions this initiative could go, exploring community belonging was selected as a focus for the initiative - in order to make a lasting and meaningful impact. The concept of belonging brings with it many opportunities, like community inclusivity, advocacy, community connectivity and strengthened relationships between neighbours.
