About the Project
Since 2008, the City of Edmonton has led a revitalization process for the Jasper Place neighbourhood (including the neighbourhoods of Britannia-Youngstown, Canora, Glenwood, and West Jasper Place, intersected by Stony Plain Road from 140 Street to 170 Street). This City-led revitalization process is wrapping up in 2023.
Some results of the City-led revitalization process include local streetscape projects that improved lighting and curbside appeal, painted murals, and the creation of the plazas located at 152nd Street and Stony Plain Road.
While the City’s revitalization project came to an end in 2023, local community members like the Stony Plain Road Business Association saw an opportunity to identify more initiatives and projects to improve the local area.
That’s where the We Belong in Jasper Place initiative came in. Our purpose was to create a more welcoming and connected community network along the Stony Plain Road and nearby neighbourhoods in west central Edmonton.
Since 2023, this initiative has supported more than 20 community-led projects. Together, we’ve brought neighbours together through music, art, food, and shared space to build a more connected, welcoming, and inclusive community.
The Stony Plain Road Business Association (Stony Plain Road & Area Business Revitalization Zone) partnered with the City of Edmonton to transition from the City-led revitalization process to a grassroots community-led development process.
To support this work, they hired Tilia Consulting to plan, organize, and run a series of engagement activities to spark a vision and path forward alongside west central Edmonton communities. Tilia’s role was simply to facilitate the process. What came out of the process was determined entirely by community members.
Did you know? Tilia Consulting is based out of Edmonton and Lindsay is a local resident in the west central Edmonton area.
The Stony Plain Road Business Association negotiated funding with the City of Edmonton for a transition process between the City-led revitalization project and We Belong in Jasper Place, a community-led development project.
The funding from the City lasted from 2023 to the end of 2025. Future projects and initiatives after this period will require the community to identify and generate new funding.
From the beginning, We Belong in Jasper Place was built on listening. We wanted to understand what belonging means to people here and how community connection could be strengthened.
Over the past two years, we invited residents, business owners, service providers, and community groups into conversations, surveys, and interviews. People generously shared their experiences and ideas—helping us see both the strengths of Jasper Place and the opportunities to build deeper connection.
This input shaped the focus of the initiative, guided the Projects for Belonging, and continues to reflect what matters most to those who live, work, and gather here. While the project is wrapping up, these insights remain a valuable foundation for future community efforts.
The End of This Phase
This initiative was always designed as a time-limited project, funded through the City of Edmonton and supported by the Stony Plain Road Business Association. After two years of community conversations and local projects, we are now completing this final phase. The City is stepping back, and no new funding will be offered through We Belong in Jasper Place.
The current phase of We Belong in Jasper Place will conclude at the end of 2025. By then, all funding, reporting, and celebration activities will be complete. While the formal initiative is ending, the relationships, ideas, and learnings gathered over the past two years remain important for Jasper Place moving forward.
Most of the funded Projects for Belonging have now wrapped up, but some groups are continuing their activities independently. These are community-led initiatives, so each one is moving forward in its own way. You can check out the list of past projects on our site, and if a project is still active, we encourage you to connect with it directly.
No new funding will be offered through We Belong in Jasper Place. This was a one-time program made possible through City funding. However, we know many groups want to keep building belonging in Jasper Place. We encourage you to explore opportunities through the City of Edmonton, local community leagues, and other granting programs that support neighbourhood projects.
Community-building doesn’t end with this initiative! You can:
- Join activities hosted by your local community league or neighbourhood group
- Support local businesses, arts, and cultural events that foster connection in Jasper Place
- Stay in touch with neighbours and keep the spirit of belonging alive through everyday acts of care and contribution
